Modest Sphinx Moth

The Modest Sphinx Moth (Pachysphinx modesta) is a large moth with a heavy body, commonly found in many parts of the southern United States and northward into Canada. It is also called the Big Poplar Sphinx. The upper side of the forewing is typically gray-brown with a dark median band. The hindwings are a deep purple color.

It has a wingspan of about 3.0 - 4.5 inches.  The larvae feed on aspen, poplar, willow and cottonwood species.
