Riodinidae is the family of small to medium-sized metalmark butterflies, mainly brown, orange and black in coloration. The name "metalmarks" refers to the small, golden or silvery metallic-looking spots commonly found on their wings. They are normally seen with their wings open. There are 1,532 species in 146 genera, worldwide.
They are typically found in the tropical latitudes, especially those of the Americas. Only about 20 species are resident in North America north of Mexico.
