Butterflies and moths belong to a group of insects called Lepidoptera. It is estimated that there are about 20,000 species of butterflies in the world.
This website is based in the United States, and on it we focus on the butterflies of North America found in backyard gardens, home landscapes, residential areas, nearby parks and along roadsides. But many of the species discussed on this website are found not only in North America, but on other continents as well.
For example, the Red Admiral, regularly seen across the Americas, also has a wide range in the warmer regions of North Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.
The Painted Lady is one of the most widespread of all butterflies, seen on every continent except Antarctica and South America. Commonly found across North America, the Painted Lady is a strong migrant in some areas. Each year it migrates from the deserts of North Africa, the Middle East, and central Asia, traveling to mainland Europe and into Britain and Ireland, and even into Iceland.
The Comma butterfly is a frequently seen butterfly in North America, and is also commonly found in North Africa, Europe, and Asia.
